CNC Programmer
Job Description
The CNC Programmer is responsible for developing, troubleshooting, and optimizing CNC software programs for 3-5 axis milling machines and turning centers. This role involves reading and interpreting blueprints, working with engineers to analyze technical data, and ensuring machines meet specified requirements. The position requires expertise in Mastercam and a focus on enhancing machining efficiency and quality.
Essential Job Functions:
- Develop, prove out, troubleshoot, and optimize CNC programs.
- Analyze technical data (models and drawings) with engineers to determine tooling, work-holding, speeds, and feeds.
- Maintain an organized tool database in Mastercam.
- Modify and optimize existing CNC programs for various machining centers to improve efficiency.
- Revise programs to eliminate errors and conduct simulations to ensure program accuracy.
- Analyze job orders, blueprints, and design data to calculate dimensions, tool selection, machine speeds, and feed rates.
- Write instruction sheets and cutter lists to guide CNC machine setup.
- Conduct trial runs or simulations to ensure machinery produces items that meet specifications.
- Suggest drawing changes to improve manufacturability.
- Leverage knowledge of machine controls to identify opportunities for process improvements.
- Adhere to safety procedures and maintain a clean, safe working environment.
Job Requirements
Required Skills/Experience/Training:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; 2-year technical or associate degree in machining preferred.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in CNC machining required; experience with Mastercam (3-5 years preferred).
- Strong knowledge of machining strategies for steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and other metals.
- Experience programming CNC turning centers and 3-5 axis CNC mills.
- Familiarity with Edgecam, Fusion 360, and Solidworks preferred.
- Ability to transition parts from first article to production.
- Mechanical aptitude with a solid understanding of design for manufacturing concepts.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and routings.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Ability to pass post-offer drug screen and background check.
Work Environment:
This role operates in a manufacturing environment at the main plant in Westbrook, Maine. The noise level can vary from moderate to loud, and the use of protective equipment is required. The job involves operating CNC machines and moving between workstations.
Physical Demands:
- Regularly required to communicate, handle small components, and remain stationary for extended periods.
- Frequently required to adjust equipment and reach into tight spaces.
- Must position and/or move up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
