Photonics Engineering Tech
Job Description
Pay Rate: $50–$52/hour
- Execute fabrication, assembly, integration, testing, and inspection processes following detailed work instructions and engineering drawings
- Perform optical fiber splicing and recoating
- Support fabrication, assembly, and inspection of photonic circuits
- Conduct mechanical builds and assemblies, including precision fitting and alignment
- Perform metal soldering and assembly of small, delicate components
- Utilize microscopy and profilometry for inspection and measurement
- Integrate COTS optical equipment (e.g., power meters, optical laser sources, monitoring equipment) based on system architecture and wiring diagrams
- Assist with equipment calibration per vendor or custom procedures
- Operate and maintain equipment such as wire bonders, photomasking systems, and epoxy application tools
- Ensure preventative maintenance is performed and documented
- Maintain a clean, organized workspace aligned with high-precision optical fabrication standards
- Communicate regularly with management regarding progress, cost, schedule, and quality targets
- Collaborate with engineers to support specialized development projects and continuous improvement efforts
- High School Diploma (or equivalent) with 6+ years of relevant experience,
OR Associate’s Degree with 2+ years of related experience - Hands-on experience with optical/mechanical fabrication and assembly processes
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, process sheets, and technical drawings
- Experience with machining operations including setup, operation, and tool adjustments for conventional or automated equipment
- Ability to work with tight tolerances and perform precision inspection tasks
- Familiarity with fabrication processes involving metals, plastics, or optical materials
- Experience pinning and assembling multiple materials/components
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
- Familiarity with Acu-Rite or similar digital readout systems
- Experience in photonics, optics, or semiconductor environments
- Familiarity with advanced inspection tools and methodologies
- Exposure to sheet metal fabrication or hardware assembly
- Ability to recommend improvements to materials, processes, or designs
- Combination of R&D lab and light production environment
- Work involves precision optical assembly, clean workspace practices, and use of specialized fabrication equipment
- Close collaboration with engineering teams on highly specialized projects
- Highly meticulous with strong attention to detail
