TOOL REPAIR / MACHINIST
Responsible for assembly and fabrication of trim dies, repair/maintenance of existing tools; assist with equipment and tool fabrication/upgrades as needed. Will work from prints and verbal instructions to machine tight tolerance tooling.
- Assemble new tooling and dies from machined subcomponents.
- Sharpen and troubleshoot trim tools to make sure they meet print requirements and cut consistently.
- Following safe work practices, perform tight tolerance machining of tools using typical toolroom equipment such as lathes, mills and surface grinders.
- Work with Engineering to design and develop tooling and equipment upgrades to reduce costs, improve productivity or part manufacturability.
- May assist with equipment installations and upgrades.
Required Skills, Education and Experience:
Must have demonstrable knowledge of toolmaking and machining. This knowledge will include but not be limited to the safe operation of lathes, mills, surface grinders. Good shop math skills, ability to read blueprints and a good team player able to interface in a positive manner with co-workers, and work with a minimum of supervision.
Must be able to read prints and sketches, understand tolerances and their effects on machining parts.
Should be familiar with secondary finishing operations such as heat treating and tempering and their effects on parts so as to take those operations into consideration when fabricating tooling.
Should have a combination of education and experience as follows:
Completion of an accredited apprenticeship program and 1 year experience in tool fabrication, or 2 year degree or certificate in tooling/machining from a recognized education organization and 1-3 years increasing experience or 4 – 6 years increasing experience in a tool room environment.
