Job Description

The Manual Machinist is responsible for performing precision machining operations to produce high-quality parts by setting up and operating manual milling and turning machines. The machinist will troubleshoot, diagnose, and make necessary mechanical adjustments or repairs, and inspect products to blueprint specifications, ensuring the highest standard of workmanship.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Machining Setup: Plan machining operations by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, and materials.
  • Fixtures & Tools: Determine and mount necessary fixtures, attachments, and tools to complete jobs.
  • Operation: Set up and operate manual mills and lathes, ensuring proper functioning.
  • Material Verification: Verify incoming work orders for correct materials.
  • Process Monitoring: Maintain specifications by observing machine operations, taking measurements, detecting malfunctions, and troubleshooting.
  • Measurement & Calculation: Use basic math, geometry, and trigonometry to calculate machining requirements.
  • Maintenance: Perform preventive maintenance and basic equipment troubleshooting.
  • Quality Assurance: Measure and inspect finished parts to ensure compliance with drawings and tolerances.
  • Documentation: Complete production and quality logs.
  • Team Collaboration: Work both autonomously and in a team, contributing to a positive work environment.
  • Safety: Adhere to safety protocols and maintain a clean, organized workspace.

Job Requirements

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; 2-year technical college degree preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of related experience in the machine tool trade.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Experience with horizontal milling machines.
    • Knowledge of measuring tools/gauges and cutting tools.
    • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and routers.
    • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift and position up to 50 pounds, handle small components, and work in tight spaces. Specific vision abilities such as close vision, color vision, and depth perception are required.

Work Environment:
The Manual Machinist operates in a manufacturing environment where the noise level is moderate to loud. The role routinely uses manual milling and turning machines, hand tools, and measuring instruments.

Physical Demands:
This position requires the ability to remain stationary, handle small components, and position oneself to adjust equipment. Frequent reaching, moving up to 50 pounds, and close, distance, and peripheral vision are necessary to perform the job duties.
